Symptom

You want to limit the access to certain directories of your website to users who have a login name.

Cause

You can either create a password protected directory from your Plesk customer control panel or you can create an .htaccess password protection. This article describes how to use the Plesk customer control panel to create a password-protected directory.

Solution

1. Log-in to the customer control panel of your host.

2. Click on the "Website & Domains" tab.

3. In the active list of your Bitpalace Business Booster that you want to edit, click the "Show more" link. If the icons are visible already, you do not need to click "show more".

4. Click on the "password-protected directories" icon.

You will see a list of all password-protected directories. This includes the built-in statistics, which is stored in the "/plesk-stat" sub-directory.

5. To add a new password-protected directory click "Add new directory".

6. Enter the name of the directory that you want to protect with a password. Always start the directory name with a slash "/". Enter a prompt that shall be shown to users who try to log-in. This could be something like "Dealer area", "Price lists" and so on.

7. Click on the "OK" button to create the password-protected directory.

By default the directory will be protected with your own login name and password. But you can also add additional users with different passwords. Once the password-protected directory has been created click on its name in the list of all password-protected directories. This will give you access to the user administration of the directory. Here you can enter a user name/password combination by which one can access the directory. Click on the "OK" button to store the new credentials. You can add as many users as you like by simply repeating the process. To remove a user from the list, simply check the user's name and click on the "remove" button.
